I’ve been recording covers of songs that were influential in my musical development (or, sometimes, because I just like them). My rules: proceed chronologically, starting with Breaking Up Is Hard To Do from 1962; and never repeat an artist. Well, I’ve made some exceptions to these rules, but I had just posted a cover from 1987 (The Dead’s A Touch of Grey) so next up would be a cover from 1988. However, this corresponds to a a period of time during which I hardly listened to music, after the birth of my son in 1987. Luckily for me, I learned that Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” which was featured in the 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony (with a legendary performance by Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman) was actually first released in 1988. So even though I didn’t know the song way back then, it seemed like the best choice, by far!
